How To Change Windows 10 Shutdown Sound: Everything You Need to Know

Older Windows versions were able to play a startup sound, a separate logon sound. A sound could also play when Windows logs off or when it shuts down. The user could assign all these sounds from Control Panel -> Sound. Starting with Windows 8, sounds for these events have been eliminated almost entirely. Let's see how to play the shutdown sound in Windows 10.

In Windows 10, Microsoft focused on making Windows boot and shut down faster. Developers of the OS had completely removed the sounds which play at logon, log off and shutdown. Even if you assign sounds to the events for 'Exit Windows', 'Windows Logon' and 'Windows Logoff' or try to restore these events using the Registry, they will not play. There is the official statement from Microsoft which explains the situation.

How To Change Windows 10 Shutdown Sound

However moving the shutdown sound this late started running into other problems. The code we use to play the sound (the PlaySound API) needs to read from the registry (to see what the preferences for this sound were) and from the disk (to read the .wav file), and we ran into issues where the sound was unable to play (or got cutoff halfway) because we had shut down the registry or the disk already! We could have spent time rewriting the API but we decided the safest and most performant thing to do was to eliminate the sound altogether."

Windows 8.1 at least is so quick to logoff that it gives no time to play the shutdown sound or logoff sound. Maybe if there was a task or service created that delayed shutdown for 3-4 seconds until the sound played and then quickly exited, the sound will reliably play every time.

By the gods almighty! This app is legendary. It does work as you described and just with a little bit of fiddling with Log off sound and Exit sound. For me the timing was better with putting system shutdown sound as log off sound, then it sounded natural and leaving exit windows sound blank aka (None). Thanks for the app. Its a bliss hearing startup and shutdown sounds again!

@Sergey Tkachenko Thanks for the detailed article, did the trick. Also got a question. Although shutdown would provide enough time to play the entire sound, it is somehow cut after a second or so. Is there a way I could specify a minimum duration (to match to duration of the sound) the task should run without being interrupted and shutdown? Thank you

I tried this on both my custom Main PC and my Alienware M17 Laptop. Everything worked except for the Shutdown Task on my Laptop. I tried disabling and re-enabling the Fast Startup, but nothing works. Is there a way to delay the shutdown process in order for the sound to play?

Sound effects have become a very integral part of electronics. Mostly every electronic device comes with a small speaker and some preset sound effects built in to alert or notify you of the actions. Well, computers and smart devices like mobiles specifically use sound effects to signify different things, and the sound effects are created and set by the manufacturer for providing a great experience for the user. And some sound effects created have a legacy behind them and they will be used for decades by the manufacturer. So, likewise, Windows OSes come with cool sound effects for every activity like startup, shutdown, error message, notifications, alarm, and much more. So, here in this article, we will discuss how you can change the startup and shutdown sound effects on your Windows 10 computer.

Windows OS is one of the most used and enjoyed OS in the tech industry. It is very versatile and offers one of the best feature sets to the users and more than half the computer-using population actually use Windows OS to run computers Microsoft does great things to maintain the integrity of the OS and provides users with the necessary features. The OS also has good aesthetics that include better sound effects to suit the situation, Windows OS comes with default sound effects for events like startup and shutdown and most users get used to it but when Windows suddenly tries to remove the startup sound after an OS upgrade, some feel the difference and some do not. Well, unfortunately, Windows 10 does not come with an innate startup sound effect. This move by Microsoft was questioned by many who loved the startup sound and if you are one of them and want the startup sound to be enabled, you can do so with ease. Well, the startup sound was removed to speed up the process as it was considered important.

Well, if you are looking for the method to enable or change the startup sound and shut down the sound on your Windows 10 computer, so, hop on to learn some simple methods and get started with enabling and changing the start-up sound on Windows 10.

Tired of that boring sound your Windows computer makes when it boots up? There are two things you can do about updating your Windows 10 startup sound. You can either turn off the startup sound or change it to your preferred jingle. Better yet, you can take things up a notch by customizing the Windows 10 startup sound. Perhaps to your favorite song or the theme song of your favorite TV show.

If the registry files responsible for both the startup and shutdown sound on your computer are excluded from the Control Panel, the Windows Logon and Windows Logoff options will be missing in the Sound settings menu.

Step 2: Now go ahead and navigate to the folder with the current startup and shutdown Windows sounds, which is C:\Windows\Media. Here you will find the files Windows XP Startup.wav and Windows XP Shutdown.wav along with a bunch of other Windows sounds.

The program is very easy to use. Click Play to hear the current startup sound, Replace to change the startup sound and Restore to revert back to the original startup sound.

Once you do that, you should hear your new startup sound when you log onto Windows. Note that you can still use the Sound Control Panel settings to change other sounds like shown for Windows XP. For example, you can click on Windows Logoff, click on Browse and pick a different WAV file. This will work just fine.

Windows 8 is a different beast altogether and pretty much all the startup and shutdown sounds are disabled by default. This is because Windows 8 sports a new fast boot (hybrid boot) that cuts down on the boot time significantly. There are two problems with Windows 8:

2. Even if you enable the sounds, the fast boot procedure bypasses all sounds. In order to hear the sounds, you have to perform a full shutdown of your system. Even performing a restart will result in the sounds not playing.

Lastly, you have to perform a full shutdown in Windows 8 in order to hear the login sound when you startup. In order to perform a full shutdown in 8.1, you have to right-click on the Start Button, choose Shut down or sign out and then click on Shut down.

There is one way but it is not perfect. I managed to download a VB sctipt that plays the sound I want at shutdown. I then conbined it with the shutdown command in a batch file. I then created a desktop icon to call it, which I also placed on the start screen. Very amrteurish I agree but at least it works. Of course it will only work from my file and a normal shutdown from the GUI plays nothing.
